Should police pursue known offenders?

Should police take up the pursuit of offenders on all occasions, even when they are known to the force?

A fatal accident occurred in Christchurch last night after a driver failed to stop when requested by police. It is understood the driver of the speeding vehicle was well-known to Christchurch police, due to his disqualification from driving. A 73-year-old and his passenger, also aged in her 70s, both died at the scene.

The police officers involved are said to be "devastated". Inspector Malcolm Johnston said “Blame for this tragedy lies entirely with this driver."

“He was signalled to stop and he should have stopped.”

Do some occasions warrant letting the offender go and picking them up at a later stage?

Yes, they should pursue offenders. POlice are damned if they do and damned if they don't. Cars should be automatically conficate and investigated as to the legitimacy of thatperson having that vehicle. If it was stolen, the car should be crushed, not auctioned, crushed. There should be an immediate remand in custody for offending drivers of 48 hrs or to the next available Court date. There should be a mandatory sentence of six months imprisonment, without remission of time. ie..full sentence.

is this a joke? so should we now overhaul all our laws and say, well if it's dangerous to the CRIMINAL if we try to apprehend them then we shouldn't try? because that type of thinking is why we now have people running from police and killing themselves and others and us all standing around looking forward to some to blame afterward. make laws harsher, punish parents for not teaching their children the respect it takes to operate in this society, punish them when their children break the laws, why not? if someone under legal age breaks the law they go through the youth system, which we all know is a joke, why not penalise the parent as they are ultimately responsible untill that child is of age?

Play to the strengths of the police, with numbers of cars and realtime communications. Don't chase them, surround them and close in.

Atempting to counter high-speed driving with another car doing the same is dumb logic. The only difference between them is one has a uniform, both are determined to win - at any cost.
