I guess in Advertising we always try to display the ideal situation. I'm sure but I don't know, that a person who is experiencing problems breastfeeding would not be offended and just accept that it's not an option for them and be OK with that - sounds like the research is there for the benefits of breast feeding - with mother encouraged to stay healthy for breast milk for child + cost savings etc. and plenty for perfectly fine bottle fed babies too, but if it doesn't work for your family that's understood. I'm sure there's is plenty of scenes of Piri with his baby to show that he is an active and great father? If it was a scene of Piri's partner breastfeeding while he supported along side her would you think that was unfair to the woman who can't? I'm sure it was just a recommendation from the league and as your guest said after the gov dept has been pushing 'breast is best - if you can' for the last few years wouldn't it be nice to continue the message if that's what they have been promoting - since we all paid for it, no offense Piri. I guess its all about the 'ideal' but understanding that its not possible for everyone. It's already targeting an audience by choosing a young father and now successful New Zealand Sports person as a role model - Is breastfeeding less popular in young mothers/families teens/20s more than 25 upwards perhaps- (has they been the target of past campaigns? I know it's supposed to be about smoking (but feeding a baby is such a stong and beautiful image how much it does stand out? there's my rant ;) Hey a great link to direct young fathers (promotes anti smoking also and isn't pro breast only) to is - greatfathers.org.nz if there is an opportunity.

Wow, such a hostile manner towards your guest Rachel. Media hype part the problem regarding the Breastfeeding issue? After that interview, I would have to agree. Why is it when women pop their heads up in an attempt to 'normalize' breastfeeding as being the healthiest option (when possible), it gets bitten off, very often by defensive middle class pakeha women. We all make the best choices possible with what information there is available. There is much effort being put into education in this area and it most definitely needs our support. I am certain that infant mortality rates will improve as breastfeeding promotion leads to the return of it being a normal and good choice.
