PHOTO: Royal baby to receive a shawl as official gift from New Zealand

An earlier suggestion by the Prime Minister that New Zealand was going to send the newborn Prince Kim Dotcom as a gift has turned out to be a red herring.

In a press release following today's birth, PM John Key has revealed the pressie will in fact be a shawl.

A what?

A shawl.

It's a cloth wrap to keep baby in. And our one was made by award-winning Kiwi spinner and knitter Cynthia Read (pictured).

Kiwi-flavoured, thanks to its "Filmy Fern" design, Cynthia knocked this gift up by hand-spinning merino wool and knitting the lace design. Margaret Stove consulted with Cynthia as she worked, ensuring she was doing it all right.

Of the birth, John Key said “This is wonderful news for Prince William and Catherine. The birth of a child is a time of great joy and excitement, and I know they will make excellent parents.”
