No mining of Schedule 4 conservation land - result?

No mining

Is the Government making a positive move by backing down over plans to mine Schedule 4 conservation land? It had been proposed that 7000 hectares of conservation land in the Coromandel, Great Barrier Island and Paparoa National Park be opened up for valuable minerals. The land is protected against mining under schedule four of the Crown Minerals Act and the proposals provoked furious opposition from the public and conservation lobby groups. Doe the Government's decision mark democracy at its best?

I think it was a good thing that the government didnt get the land for mining, We need to go take a look at reefton mining, The big whole in the side of the hill. Did reefton township gain anything from the mining?? See the enviromental effect it has on reefton now, Go take alook of what reefton looks like now and if their is a earthquake their, Will reefton still be on the map?? Look at the lives most mining companies take each year around the country, And by the way When the citizens of New Zealand have a good Idea for work The Government says no, Who out there had a good project to make money and the Government said NO??? Who,s really filling there pockets, Keep NZ Green and beauitful for one of the best tourist places in the world

Mining is inevitable, its just a matter of time because the potential for revenue is too great. Key and Co should have put forward more options so we could have begun digging by now. These mines can provide employment for prisoners and dare i say it, housing. Open cast mines can be filled with prisons instead of our cities. Before prisoners complain about being far away from their families, we can provide them with video calling to their loved ones via internet in a secure room, just like any dad who travels the world on business and keeps in touch via skype. The prisoners who work could even fund their life after prison instead of being state dependant. We may have to restrict this mining workforce to 10-20% prison population and only those on good behavior so the rest of us have tho opportunity to benefit. National appear weak on this matter and Labour are too afraid to seriously challenge..once again...

We need something to counter the reverse gear our Economy is going to hit when GST kicks in. Hell if we got a couple of good mining opertaions off the ground the revenue the Government would make would be more than enough for no rise in GSt, Tax Cuts - not to mention employment etc. It's worth nothing in the ground. Shoot the hippies, mine the ground, it Makes NZ better in 2 ways then.

I think mining should be allowed now so that New Zealanders can benifit from it. In a few years when the Chinese are in government, they won't care about national parks, native bush, Sacred Maori land or the Greens.

betty wil, what compromise? They wanted to remove the land from section 4, they didn't, so they did not get what they want. There is no secret agenda.

Gee you people are not smart. John key knew that mining needed to be done, so he told you he wanted all of NZ and he settled for what he already had in mind which will be done as a compromise. John Key is a clever man.

If Brownlees appetite for mining is as big as it appeares his appetite is for food,It seems this back down is a just break between meals.
Was that a spade or a spoon?Looking at the chin on him I think a spoon.
