Chief High Court Judge Helen Winkelmann has ruled that the police search and seizure at the Dotcom's rented mansion earlier this year was illegal. The subsequent shipping of copies of his computer data offshore to the US has also been deemed unlawful.

The case has received interested from around the world due to the colourful lifestyle of the Megaupload founder.

The entrepreneur made an emotive appearance on Campbell Live following his arrest, during which he protested his innocence and appeared to make a case against the case.
