Isn't the "Wellywood" sign the best idea ever?

| More

Are plans to erect a giant Hollywood-style sign, labelling the city as "Wellywood", a complete non-starter and distasteful publicity stunt? It has also emerged that the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has not been asked permission for the famous sign to be copied in Wellington, adding further fuel to those who opposing the idea. Would this sign add another notch to New Zealand's world status or is it just plain embarrassing?

"WELLYWETA" sounds better. Hasn’t Hollywood got sole rights to this sign anyway, so it would be impossible...

IMO it is a promotion stunt. Loads of exposure for wellington for not much money?
A name more apt could be "FREEZINGCOLDHOLE" ??

kane, As i have said before. A lot of countries offer larger subsidies than NZ. If it was just about money they would go to countries that offered higher subsidies.

If it was cheaper too make movies in the USA or England Or any other country they would shift weta and there production team too were ever... Yes New Zealand does have a great back drop for movies... But we are not the only country with fantastic views like ours.. Lord of the rings could of been made in Sweden and still had the same visual effects.. Thing is New Zealand is cheaper for movies too be made in... This is going too make me unpopular.. But it is the simple truth...

kane - NZs landscape is popular as it makes a great backdrop. Look at Lord of the rings, people are still flocking to NZ from what they saw in LOTR's. Weta digital are a world class digital effects company. Look what they made with Avatar. There are very few companies that could produce effects like that.

Wellywould wanna be.Americanising something unniquely kiwi. What a bunch of show boaters, cant they come up with something better.

Hmmm Of course its all about cost when making a movie... Why else would they make movies in New Zealand if it wasn't cheaper for them too do so....

I am sure the visitors passing thou will have a great laugh... As they jump on the ferry or bus as they head too Rotorua and Queenstown... And who ever is paying for the eye sore it wont becoming out of my pocket... But will make my country a bit of a laugh... Yes 3rd world country's do offer great tax incentives...

By Chris

Kane, also why would any one's rates pay for a business to erect a sign? The sign is being put up by the Wellington Airport, and I am pretty sure the airports revenue is from people flying in and out of it. Not from council rates.

By Chris

kane, you are incorrect. NZ gives tax incentives, but they are very low compared to other countries. If it was just about tax incentives no-one would ever make a film in NZ.

Humans Dancing on Earth
Happiness and dancing transcend political boundaries and occur in practically every human society. Above, Matt Harding traveled through many nations on Earth, started dancing, and filmed the result. The video is perhaps a dramatic example that humans from all over planet Earth feel a common bond as part of a single species. Happiness is frequently contagious -- few people are able to watch the above video without smiling.
