To whose culture(s) does the haka belong?
Val Adams has hit out at the performance of a haka in her new book.
Beijing, 2008, around 2am the morning after claiming her gold medal, Valerie recounts turning a corner in the Olympic compound and witnessing the team's management performing a haka.
"I was so embarrassed to be a Kiwi right there. I felt, 'How dare you be so arrogant to do the haka now, when James Dolphin, my team-mate, is due to run the biggest race of his life, the 200 metres qualifier, at nine o'clock this morning?'."
Adams, a Kiwi of Tongan heritage, called the performance cringeworthy.
Can you understand Valerie's frustration? Is the haka Maori, Kiwi, Pacific or all of the above?
