Is Air New Zealand's pink uniform culturally insensitive?

Air New Zealand's new uniform

The proposed new Air New Zealand uniform - is it culturally insensitive or just plain ugly and fit for drag queens?

The head of Canterbury University's Maori and Indigenous school Rawiri Taonui says the design is way too busy and inelegant and was obviously drawn up by someone who doesn't appreciate the culture or its symbolism.

What do you think? Is it back to the drawing board for Air NZ and Trelise Cooper?

I'm looking forward to wearing it! Much nicer than the drab current uniform! Although not to keen on the hat!

Why is there a need for change ~ but then again I won't fly with them again!

The new uniforms are absolutely unappealing- New Zealand will lose any class it had. They need to be looked at again- decide on something with more sophistication

Jeepers, can't they come up with something that is not so wacky and will be out of date in a week. Originality is so boring these days, go back to simple style classic's I say.

I think they should go back to the drawing board because if doesn't look anything New Zealand. The shapes are good but look again at the color.

I don't see what all the fuss is about. It's fine - I'd wear it if it was my uniform. And I don't know what all the hooha is about the design - it looks like a thousand other fabric designs with swirls and curls. If they're stylised koru (also the internationally used symbol for life - which is a shape common in nature - unfurling leaves, water movement, shells etc) - then great - it makes it something we can identify as truly kiwi. I'd way rather it had a Maori/kiwi theme to the design than stripes or polka dots or flowers...

It would look good as gift wrapping paper, but it's repulsive as an Air NZ uniform. In fact it's ugly as a dress altogether. I agree with Brian.."Let's project a sophisticated image" Indeed!

UGLY. Why couldnt they opt for something with a wow factor instead of an "eew" factor. Lets project a sophisticated image of our national carrier. Why the pink?

There's nothing wrong with the uniform. People like Rawiri Taonui need to stop putting 'cultural argument' obstacles in the way of everything businesses in this country seek to do.
