By Duncan Wilson

In the two years prior to January 2012, 357,056 hectares of New Zealand land was approved for overseas sale.

Of that, the United States, United Kingdom and Switzerland ranked top-three of the land-buyers. No Chinese investors bought NZ farm land in this time.

The farm land consents granted in this two-year period, by country of majority of ownership, are:

United States investors bought 25,306 hectares of farm land

British investors bought 22,600 hectares of farm land

Swiss investors bought 9,727 hectares of farm land

German investors bought 6,834 hectares of farm land

Australian investors bought hectares of farm land

Investors from Hong Kong bought 759 hectares of farm land

On January 27, 2012, the New Zealand Overseas Investment Office (OIO) made final approval for the sale of 16 Crafer farms - around 7,893 hectares - to Chinese group Shanghai Pengxin Group.
