By Bruce HopkinsOn my last show I had a call from a woman by the name of Sandi. It turns out Sandi and her husband who has a bloody brilliant name... he's a fellow member of the Bruce society, marry one and you marry us all! Anyway Sandi and Bruce moved to Western Aussie a couple of years ago to get work. Bruce, bloody beautiful name that, was truckie and got work driving for the mining industry, and as we have always heard, earning some serious coin.
Sandi got herself started up as a property manager and now has around 120 properties in her portfolio.
When these two kiwi battlers made this move Bruce was 57 yrs old!!! They have now formed a company to help other kiwi drivers get up and running in OZ. It turns out there is a veritable minefield of red tape to work you way through before your NZ drivers qualifications are transferable to the OZ scene.
For a fee Sandi and Bruce hold your hand ( now that’s a sight, truckies holding hands ) and take you through the process, meaning you get out into the workforce pronto.
Their email is pilbaradrivers@gmail.com, attention Sandi or Bruce
The fact that as of June 2009, the land of the dingo childcare institute has added an average of 1000 job per day bodes well for those NZ’ers who aspire to be ditch hoppers.
In fact I took my darling daughter Francesca to the airport to fly off to her new job in Melbourne at 5am this morning! Ahhhh I am still not fully comprehending that she is not just leaving for a holiday, I am going to miss her sooooo bloody much.
She will be working for a fantastic kiwi company, Wall Fabrics, over there, but it highlights that not only for worker but also for businesses, Australia is where the opportunities for growth exist on our doorstep.
John Key's determination that we to catch up with Australia fiscally is just not feasible. We could always build the bike track over the Tasman and work with the Aussies on that one.
