Dog attacks: What is the solution?

What needs to change to cut the number of vicious dog attacks occurring?

Six children have been attacked by dogs in the last four weeks, with the youngest one just 15-months old.

The attacks have set off calls for certain breeds of dog to banned.

Should laws on dogs be changed or is it a problem with educating owners?

From my perspective I simply do not know what the attraction these dogs have to people is. They are certainly of no use and one could hardly call them ornaments. Coming from a farming background I have known dogs to bite, as it is a dog thing, but in my younger days I don't ever recall attacks (and even deaths) from dogs like we are getting now. This has all come about with the allowing of what can only be termed "vicious" dogs in to the country and for what purpose I will never know. Gosh, we even used our border collie sheep dogs for pig hunting, an intelligent breed that I have not heard of attacking in the sense of the word today. Without going into stereotyping, the majority of owners of these types of dogs do seem to have a macho aura about them and the dog is merely a status symbol. Hardly a good enough reason for the existence of such dogs in New Zealand!

Its the owners I have had a red nose a eng staffie and now have a amstaff. All of my dogs where good ppl loving playful dogs. Amstaff is not a pitbull at all its eng staffie crossed with Amercian Bull dog. they look sort of the same. but if you know what your looking at you can tell. pit bulls are smaller and are more jumpers and leaner still very loving dogs. they are not ment to be these big bulky things you see on tv. just ppl stuffing with the breed. How meny attacks are pitbull cross. you never see purebreeds or very little any how attacking ppl, never do you hear media say bitbull crossed with chow chow or what have you. you mix breeds with pitbull or amstaff or rottie with a nippy pain in arse handbag dog you have a powerful dog that likes to bite. So dont Blame the poor pitpull they just want love. blame the dipshit who chains them up kicks them and teaching them to bite and fight. Im sure if you had that done to you you would hate ppl too. and also if they get banned what happens to the family pet pitbull with good owners do you just take there pet of them break a kids hearts. they are not bad dogs read up on the breed before you judge. they are one of the best breeds you can get. al they want to do is please there owner. that is in there breeding but they do need alot of love and cant be left alone they dont like it. my dog will follow me to the loo. always on my lap need to be close to me. screen the owners dont bann the breed.

Its simple, stop the knuckle draggers owning dogs. Having a dog takes a lot of time and patience to train, these low iq's morons of our society have these dogs as a status symbol. yes any dog can bite but all dogs can be trained and socialised.

Dogs bite they are basically wild animals... All dogs bite simple... Teach parents this easy to learn fact... We teach kids that bees and wasp sting... Its a matter of treating dogs with the same respect we give other wild animals... I dont think humans will ever stop dogs from biting we have been trying for thousands of years to... Owners need to keep their dogs away from children and parents need to keep their kids away from dogs simple as that... As for adults entering property's were a dog is present and they fear for their safety... Just dont enter the property the census or what ever you are doing isn't worth being harmed... And with this hysteria around dog bites we are recreating victims... I heard a caller saying she was bitten by a small dog it left bite marks... Then she started talking about how its effected her life... A elderly man got bitten by a small dog it drew blood on his leg he didn't get it seen to then it got infected which he also blamed the dog for... Mind boggles how they all come out of the wood work... 12,000 reported attacks not all would of been bad... Maybe a few hundred of them at best... Some people do like to blow things out of proportion and some kiwis suffer from what I can make out a victim syndrome... They want to be a victim not sure why to tell a story maybe to get attention??
