Does flying the Maori flag on Waitangi Day show disunity?

Do plans to fly the Maori flag this Waitangi Day show disunity with the rest of New Zealand? Manukau, Whanganui and Rotorua have stated their case against flying the tino rangatiratanga flag. Ngai Tahu have also said they will not hoist the flag in Canterbury, saying the "flag has been nothing but trouble". What flag(s) do you think should be flown?

It is tradition to let the Tino Rangatiratanga flag be flown. Not flying the Tino Rangatiratanga flag is dissing and denying the New Zealand culture. Let it be flown and respect our history! Is it really a big deal anyway? Waitangi Day is only once a year! Just let the flag be flown.

Blake, you calling Honi a Racist shows how mind numbingly stupid you are. If you want to burn a flag, burn the New Zealand flag it is a worthless piece of c**p. Well Trevor, his people could be many things. He is the elected representative in Parliament for Tai Tokerau, he is a proud northlander, and a Maori. To all his detractors, the only reason for you not liking him could only be either, you are a member of the national front, you are dumb enough to believe the NZ media, or you are threatened by him. Threatened because he is a Maori who won't allow you to oppress him like you oppress most Maori, he has been highly successful, and is highly intelligent.

Chris - Hone is a racist, he hates white people, and his damn flag should be ripped down and burned for the racist tripe it represents.

The only thing Hone has given his people is furthur alienation from peaceloving NZers.

trevor - Honi is not a racist, if you believe that you must be stupid enough to believe the lies spread by the mainstream media every day. Honi is a great man, he is a model citizen, I wish we had more people like him. He is highly intelligent, hard worker who has given so much to his people.

hone's flag ,hone's snout in the trough, that racist mo-fo should be kicked out of parliment and made to go home to his equally racisit mother.

The minute the "so-called" Maori flag flys in this country as a recognised NZ flag..we are outa here..!!
The Maori over the past 5 decades (probably more) have bled this country to the extent that we are now paying B2.00 a month in debt. Would that money not have been better spent in not forking out for so called "grievances" but contributing to the entire benefit of all New Zealander's. No wonder the government hasn't got any money, it's all been spent on historic crap that should have been put to bed a century ago. What else do you want Maori or you just going to keep on take, take take and still end up on the welfare in prison or in rehab (Oh sorry, you don't do REHAB..!!) Get your arses into the real world, feed your children (no, not grass!) send them to school and make them stay there, stay away from the gangs, the drugs, the pokies, the alcohol and find out who murdered the Kahui twins.! Unless you people wake up then you will always be trass and will always be called "trash". What a great way to get to HEAVEN.! Explain youselves...

Tim Wikiriwhi said it all for me! I am white, my child is as close to 50/50 Caucasian/Maori as you can get, I served in the armed forces and I know a bit about N.Z history. Descendent's of turekareka such as Hone and Willi should read something like The Littlewood Treaty or works of James Cowen or the Rev. William Marsden. Maliciously Opined Arrogant Racist Isolationists have no place in the society that I wish to live in.

By Chris

Tim Wikiriwhi, your attitude disgusts me. We fly a British flag, we are not Brits.

As a Maori I am deeply offended that the racist flag of the Maori separatists /sovereignty movement is supposed to represent me in any way shape or form! It is the Flag of shysters who have hijacked the true meaning of the treaty of Waitangi from being a document of unity into some sort of justification for apartheid!
That John Key endorsed it only reveals what a Judas he is.
He hongied Tama Iti who has defiled our flag many times and should be in jail for conspiring to commit racial terrorism!
I support retaining our real Flag with the union Jack and southern cross and see the move to get rid of it as just another attempt by the Anti-British colonialism of the Indigenous Rights racist and the UN.
I am not ashamed of our British colonial history nor to I believe the excuse that it is not inclusive of every New Zealander. I welcome migrants to become fellow citizens of our country but reject this as a pretext to change our Flag.
When you migrate here you migrate to our Flag as much as to our shores…and when I say ‘our’ I mean all New Zealanders irrespective of ethnicity.
Long may our current flag fly!
God Bless all the old diggers and Maori Warriors who have fought under that glorious banner!
Tim Wikiriwhi.
