Auckland Grammar School students publicly apologise to war veterans over 'nazi-stunt'.

Auckland Grammar School students have apologised to staff and war veterans at the Auckland War Memorial Museum today, after they were caught bowing and saluting at nazi symbols. Were these kids just making fun of the regalia? Are we overreacting to this? Do they deserve this kind of national attention over this?

Good evening Karyn and Andrew.

I'm emailing you in regards to the Auckland Grammar students who have been rightfully hung, drawn and quartered in the court of public opinion over their actions in the Auckland Museum.

Please let me dispel a number of things I have been hearing since this issue cropped up. First off, as a final year high school student, let me say that not all teenagers are ignorant. We don't all sit around playing video games, become anti-social by texting too much and get up to no good on the Internet as the media would have you believe. Some of us actually do other things. We are not totally incapable of noticing the world around us and of making an effort to understand it and it's past. I beg of you, please do not tar all us with the same brush.

My second point is in regards to the comments made about the school curriculum. Offering the excuse of the debatable fact that these students didn't know what went on during the 30s and 40s because the "curriculum" has not taught them is such a weak argument. From Year 9 (First year of high school) students are taught a general overview of world history, but even this general overview is taught in great detail with one f the major topics being Nazi Germany and World War Two. As they progress through the years the subjects become more specialised. For example, in my Year 12 history class last year the very first topic we studied was the origins of World War II, starting with the end of World War One and covering everything in between within Germany at the time IE Hitler's rise to power and then the atrocities that ensued. Even if they didn't know those facts in as much detail as others they still would have had a small inkling of what went on.

My personal opinion on this matter is that they got what they deserved. I have seen the photos on Stuff.co.nz and even though the students were taking the mickey somewhat, they should have known that their actions were outside the acceptable boundaries of decency, of sensitivity and of general common sense and, in every sense, they got what they deserved. Although instead of taking tour groups around the museum, which is what I understand is part of their punishment, they should be made to watch the actual footage that the United States and British armies captured when they first arrived at some of the death camps. The footage is not of a Hollywood blockbuster - It is real and it is truly terrifying, and anyone who watches it will truly come to understand the realities of Nazi rule.

Lest We Forget.

kids are irreverent and boys of that age just do stuff cause the don't think and thank god for that. did anyone think that if the media idiots had not plastered it all over the place no one would be offended except those that want to complain about something. interesting that muslims believe the holicaust did not happen and here these KIDS are three bows to the east infront of something not recognised as happening. and If we treat these kids like offending adults then kids should be able to sail the world thats an adult thing as well.

"Micheal Laws comments over the unwarrented extent of Media attention set on the boys"

As he discusses the boys on national talkback radio. Unless Radio is not considered media anymore????.....or maybe he seems to always believe he's the only one with a warrant to voice his opinion but no one else is allowed to???
Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black.

Somehow this reminds me of the DEMON drink PR stunt with the NZ soldiers posing in front of a war misile with the Demon branding posted on it.

We need to get off our high horses and stop making a big fuss over little things and start dealing with the bigger problems.

While i agree with Micheal Laws over the unwarrented extent of Media attention set on the boys i do think they have an obligation to apoligise to the general public for their culturally insensative and downright deplorable actions,It is never "ok" to post on the internet let alone perform actions such as these boys have done but in saying that the Media should back of and leave them alone.
