The best option for this nation is offshore generation. Yes the construction costs would be higher, but there is near limitless potential. Wind turbines built offshore are becoming popular in Europe. With more research, wave/tidal power could be massively rolled out here.

I would rather err on the side of conserving electricity like we all so dutifully do when we think the dams are going to run out! Cities competed with each other to see who were making the greatest savings and then that deathly silence as soon as we think we have enough water again! Innovations for me would include compulsory use of energy saving light bulbs, devices using sunlight, wind whatever that reduced the use of electricity for heating water, and the compulsory use of front loading washing machines which use far less water, detergent and electricity. No magic bullets but the impact of these moves along with the current move for insulation would be a beginning. But for goodness sake NO NUCLEAR!!

I am not for or against nuclear power... It has been debated before with a lot of interesting opinions... As our country gets bigger it may become a more realistic option... Maybe not in our life time but someday... I think setting up turbines in the surf is a very expensive option and I am sure the technology isn't there too do it yet... And with a lot of maintenance cost and set up cost... Make that idea a very expensive option too... Wind power yeah sounds good.. But who wants the sound of windmills near them is the problem with that... That is my understanding of some of the ideas... I could be wrong tho

Im sick to death of paying exorbitant rates to existing suppliers thats for sure!!!! Believe me I'm keen to uprise and revolt to the nearest alternative at a nod!...preferably to "clear conscience pastures " but lets get real...initial outlay costs for lower socio ecos are on the winning lotto list as well. "The Coalrange & Candle principalites" and "The No-Nuke-reNegers" are neck and neck!!

A charge on Transpower will push up the price of long distance power. encourage the use of distributed power generation and electricity subsitution such as solar water heating. All good

Power companies should be forced to buy back power from individual householders who are prepared to put in solar power units. It would save other forms of generation as well as saving the householders.

By kaneI could bring up the debate on how cheap nuclear power would be for everyone... But best leave that for now... I Agree with Sarah as long as I can turn on power at home and when I want it fine.... Our extremely high power rates takes care of all the other stuff....So tell me kane what do we do with the raidoactive waste from these plants...make weapons???...untill science comes up with a non harmfull way to dispose of the by products of necular fusion then it will never be a sustainable or ecological way to attain power..the by products are so dangerous that the raidoactive material remains raidoactive for like 20,000 years (correct me if im wrong please)...this in a small country is not viable imanige if shit happened and we had a chernobial here over half the country would become poision not a pretty picture eh!
We are so far behind the world in forms of greem energy its a joke to say this country is green is wrong maybees the trees are green yes but as a people we are far behind the world in these free forms of energy...in europe they have had commerical wind farms for years...yet people cry in this country ooh they look so horrible etc etc what a bunch of winners...this country is too full of people that only see there little world instead of thinking of the real issues at hand...like free energy...wind...waves...solar...anyone out there know how much of this countrys energy comes from these sources?a few years ago i read in national geographic about the 3 mega watt wind turbines that they erect in germany...is there anything like that here?
